If you read about a notable figure in history, you will see references to their journal entries. This is because journaling was considered both an effective way to keep a diary and a method for thinking things through. This remains true today.

What happened before there were computers? It seems hard to imagine, but that time was only 30 years ago for society in general. For most people, the answer was to keep journals of everything from their business transactions to personal life.

Perhaps the most famous of journal keepers was Anne Frank. Of Jewish faith, she and her family lived under constant threat from Nazi forces when said forces invaded the Netherlands and the family took extreme steps to hide from persecution.

Read Anne Frank's Journals and you can't help but be moved. Most people only look at it from their perspective as readers. If you step back, you can see how keeping these journals probably helped this young girl deal with the stress.

Obviously, I hope your life is not as extreme as Anne Frank's! That being said, the process of journaling or keeping a diary is something you should strongly consider doing if you are not already. It has many benefits and no real downside I can think of.

The first benefit of journaling is simply keeping a record of your life. While we all think we have a sharp memory, can you really remember what you were doing even a year ago? I can't. Reading back through a journal is often like reliving the period in question.

A journal is also an excellent means for developing a bit of perspective. In our hurly burly world, it is easy to get caught up in the events of the moment whether good or bad. Writing out your thoughts can calm you down and force you to think things through.

To this end, keeping a diary is also beneficial because it can help you see the big picture. At this moment, some aspect of your life may seem a calamity. Reading through old entries, reminds you that you've survived other situaitons and will this one.

For some families, journals serve a functionary role in the history of the family. They are passed down from generation to generation and create a written record of your geneology. You don't have to do this, but it makes for great reading over time.
