Kids Contests: Where a Kid Can Be A Kid, Creatively

Summertime, and thoughts turn to video games, staying indoors in rooms behind closed doors, with the lights out, curtains drawn, half-eaten cereal bowls with milk who knows how old, souring under the bed. With any luck, the bed will be partially made, and maybe, just maybe, your kids will get out of their pajamas and into some halfway decent clothes. Not a pretty picture, is it? If you want to avoid this parents' nightmare, I suggest looking seriously into kids contests, both the online versions, and the real world versions.

The first type of contest is children photography contests. Digital cameras, even cell phones, make it extremely easy nowadays for children to become the next Ansell Adams. Taking pictures while on family vacation, especially ones involving nature, such as when on trips to national parks or famous landscapes, would make excellent entries in an online children photography contest.

Picture contests are similar to photography contests, but instead of using a digital camera or cell phone to take pictures of the world around them, kids would take pen or paint or pencil to paper to draw their interpretation of the world around them, expressing themselves as only they know how. The pictures could then be scanned into the computer and uploaded to online picture contests.

Then there are the other numerous kids contests online. A quick search of Google even revealed one of my personal favorites: an online contest where kids wrote an essay detailing their imaginary adventures in far away lands. What better way to teach them about geography and culture than this? Who knows, your kids might find they enjoy writing and another author is born. My writing career began in a similar way.

If the internet is not your style, or you would like to limit your child's access to it, then by all means, take a trip to the local bookstore or library, and seek out the many contest magazines housed there. There are complete magazines that cater to contests of all sorts, from writing, to drawing to photography. And it would get your kids out of the house once in a while.

There are still cute baby contests you could enter your baby into. Hopefully your cute baby is not addicted to video games yet, so it is not too late to steer the little angel away from these activities and to teach him or her that there are a lot more fun summertime activities. Win a few of these cute baby contests, and you won't have to deal with addictive video game playing, but you will have to work through the self-absorbing attitude that may result.

The possibilities are in endless supply thanks to the internet. The internet does not have to be considered a dangerous device in which your children should be kept away. There are numerous resources that can be used, with proper parental supervision, to explore our world and the people in it, and encourage the blossoming of promising early careers.

Kids contests are a fun, exciting way to keep kids from wasting away their summer break on mindless, useless, nonprocuctive activities. It is also a tremendously enjoyable way for parents and their kids to come together in a creative way, to secure the bonds of childhood memories in the hearts of their loved ones forever.
