Richard Louv, author of the book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder has coined the term Nature-Deficit Disorder to describe what research shows is a lack of appreciation of nature in children today. Some of our children are urban bound and do not have access to state parks or other nature centers. However, Mr. Louv describes most of our children as overly 'plugged in.' They spend most of their time in front of the computer, television, or video games and too little time outside playing, camping, fishing, biking, hiking, or taking part in other outdoor activities that foster an appreciation for nature.
Mr. Louv is co-founder of Children and Nature Network. You can learn more about him, his work and the site at www.childrenandnature.org.
