A routine is a magical thing in a performance such as ice skating. In everyday life, it can suck the proverbial soul out of you. If you find yourself in a rut, you need to break the routine.
Movies and books often suggest that a person in a rut has a sudden inspirational moment that changes them forever. Sorry, it doesn't really work that way for most people. Instead, it comes from recognizing you are in a routine and moving beyond it.
There is an old axiom about life going on all around us, yet we don't notice. If you get caught up in the repetition of your life, it can often become pure drudgery. You need to open your eyes to the world.
So, where can you find inspiration in your daily life? Well, there is no universal answer. Remember, inspiration is unique to the person involved. That being said, what about the following.
1. Go see a random band.
2. Instead of being cautious, plan on saying yes to something new at least once a day.
3. Recognize the value of time. Your fears today will probably mean nothing in a year.
4. Laugh at yourself.
5. Read an old diary.
6. Kiss your spouse or partner.
7. Call a brother or sister to reminisce and laugh.
8. Stop smoking. Today. Now!
9. Take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds and slowly breathe out your nose to relax.
10. If you are eating out, focus on the taste of the food, not the discussion at the table.
11. Stop reading fiction and focus on non-fiction. You will be amazed at what people have accomplished.
12. Hold a wine tasting party.
13. Go online and find a chat forum for some hobby you like where other enthusiasts can be found. Chat away!
14. Hey, even George Bush became president. If he can, what can you accomplish?
15. Do a search on YouTube for "running bear" and watch the video. If you don't double over in laughter, see a doctor immediately.
16. Read a poem.
17. Try painting. You don't have to show anyone!
18. Watch the movie "March of the Penguins" even ifwell, you hate penguins.
19. Read a biography on Mother Teresa.
Some of these things will work for you while others may not. The point is not so much the list, but the idea you need to branch out in your life. Life is not about routine. It is about much, much more. Go find out!
