The idea that the Great Pyramid was merely a tomb of a pharaoh was rejected by many people over the centuries, but the real purpose for its existence was not discovered until well into the 19th century.
The greater majority of those doubters ( that the pyramid was a tomb) felt that it was something more; something far greater.
As far back as Kircher in 1666 it was expressed that the Great Pyramid had secret mystic significance and as a result mystics would journey to the very Kings chamber to make incantations thinking somehow they could contact the neither world. Star worshippers also made attendance thinking they would gain wisdoms.
As far back as 1693 men expressed their opinion such as Carari and de Chazelles that the Great Pyramid was built for astronomical purposes. Where as later in 1774 Paul Lucas expressed his opinion that it was built primarily as a sundial to track and make exact marking of the time of the solstices
Partly based upon the old idea that the form of the Pyramid represented the diverging rays of the Sun upon the Earth, several writers during the latter part of the 18th century and the early part of the 19th century maintained that the base measurements of the Great Pyramid represented the days in a year.
However it wasn't until 1840 that eminent Egyptologist Sir Gardner wilkinson threw doubt on the tomb-theory so far as the Great Pyramid was concerned. Suggesting even further that perhaps the Great Pyramid wasn't even built by the Egyptians!
