When seeking a quality women's self-defense program, first and foremost, you must ask for and thoroughly check out the instructor's credentials. This is true regardless of whether you're...
* an Adult who wants to be able to handle herself, or...
* A Parent looking for a self-defense program for your daughter
I can't stress this point enough, because, unlike most other things in your life...
... your life, or the life of someone you love, could literally depend on the choice you make.
You and I both know that the world is filled with people who have barely the knowledge, skill or common sense to get by. You probably see, interact with, and maybe even work with a few of them every day!
This is not to imply that a black belt, martial arts teacher cannot defend him or herself. But, let me ask you, who would you trust your life to...
... the person who has practiced their skills in a game or sport atmosphere for the purpose of winning a belt or trophy, or...
...the person who has real life-experience in actually surviving actual attacks from real attackers and had to insure that what they learned would indeed work when they needed it to save their life?
You don't have to answer that, we both know the who you'd choose. And so would I.
Other Things to ConsiderWhen Looking for Girls and Women's Self-Defense
The following is just a partial list of some of the other significant differences between self defense for men and women.
* Cultural Influences - girls have been taught from a very early age that fighting was not "lady-like."
Goodness! What would people think me if my daughter knew how to protect herself?!
* Situational Self-Defense Issues - rape and sexual assault are two of the greatest differences between men and women when it comes down to the things they will have to deal with.
This goes back to cultural beliefs and influences. And in ours, we find that men are typically attacked by male attackers with the intention of crushing their victim, where-as women are attacked more with an eye on control or conquering.
Throw in the strength differential between men and women that I talk about in books like "The Karate-Myth" and "For Women-Only!", and you see how each gender has very different situations to deal with, each requiring very different self-defense skills and tactics.
* Wrong Information - I think that the majority of instructors teaching self-defense mean well. I don't think that they intentionally try to mislead anyone. It's just that...
... most of these people have no real experience themselves to go on, so they end up doing what everyone else does when they don't know any better...
... they make seemingly logical assumptions within their own frame of reference.
The problem is that we're talking about self-protection here...
... self defense for women...
... self-defense for teenage girls. Not...
... chicken soup. Where, if you screw things up, you can just dump everything and start over.
A mistake in a women's self-defense situation, in any situation requiring defense against an attack, could be very, very costly indeed.
