If you undertake rock climbing, there is no denying you are going to be high up in the air sooner or later. This means you need equipment, partners and a pretty big commitment. Bouldering offers a different way to climb with little risk yet massive challenge.
Bouldering is not going out for the evening in Bouder, Colorado. It is the act of climbing compact surfaces with interesting characteristics. Often, this means a boulder, which is where it gets its name. 10 to 15 foot walls are also popular.
The goal of climbing is to get from one point to another. Most climbs have set routes. The cool thing about bouldering is it does not. You can create all kinds of different routes across a boulder to keep things interesting and test yourself.
At its outset, climbing boulders was seen as a method for training for bigger climbs. While some stick to this view, many now view bouldering as a sport within itself. An interesting boulder can offer many different routes and be climbed for years.
While bouldering is certainly safer given the fact you are low to the ground, it is not without risk. You should always use a crash pad on the ground to catch you during falls. A fall from 8 feet can still do damage and you will fall, so be safe.
The same goes for avoiding injuries. You will constantly see people just jump on a boulder route without warming up at all. This is a recipe for an injury. Your shoulder has to carry the same weight whether you are 8 feet in the air or eighty. Warm up!
Buildering is a form of bouldering that happens in the urban environment. Often around adult beverage establishments. Yes, climbers get enticed with the wall of a building front and just start climbing up and up.
Buildering can be a good bit of fun, but is hardly high in the pantheon of safe climbing. The ground is usually brick, concrete or something hard. Falls can hurt. The local authorities also tend to take a dim view of the activity and arrests are common.
Personally, I enjoy bouldering. In my opinion, it is the single best way to improve your climbing techniques. Spend a few months challenging yourself on boulders and you will be amazed how advanced you become. Enjoy!
