Not everyone is a born conversationalist so first date conversation can be superficial, awkward, and painful. A little bit of research and practice can go a long way. Think the scene in Bridget Jones' Diary where she practices pronouncing Chechnya.
Of course there are the basics like family composition, schooling, hobbies, books, movies, etc., that you shouldn't forget. Here are a few other tips to make that first date conversation flow.
Listen to what your date says
The sources of great conversation are there, just waiting for you to jump on them. If your date tells you about city, state, region of his childhood and you've never been there, ask to hear more about Albany, for instance, or ask for more information (if you've been there) about what you did or didn't see. Listen for openings to those follow up questions and thenfollow up!
Find offbeat news
Be prepared with a few interesting conversation topics by getting a quick read on the internet. To fill up those lulls in the conversation find entertaining topics on CNN's Funny News, popular picks on Digg.com and Best-of-Craigslist, which are likely to entertain most of us.
Your date's interests: research
So you can ask intelligent questions on the date, try to find out what his interests are beforehand; you can do this on the phone before you meet, from his online profile, or from the friend that set you up. He'll be impressed that you researched.
Look at your nightstand
For every question you ask your date, you should be able to answer yourself. In other words, think about the CD that's currently playing in your car, the book on your nightstand, and the last vacation you took, and be prepared for the questions that your date (just like you) is preparing to ask you.
Telling a few jokes
Don't start now if you rarely tell jokes. But if you know you're funny and your friends normally laugh at your jokes, you're probably safe.
Things to avoid
When deciding on your mate it is important to discuss topics like politics and religion. But for first dates the ol' saying that these things shouldn't be talked about in mixed company stands true. Before your date gets to know you well, this could be a great way to scare him off.
