To be called a lawyer you will need to have successfully be trained in aspects of law and in America other names are also used to describe what you do like advocate, legal advisor or the more popular, In criminal or civil trials in court, the lawyer representing the client is then called an advocate. A slightly different set of circumstances when they give advice to clients and suggestions on how to proceed in a case means they are then referred to as a legal advisor.

Although they all can represent their clients in court this is a very rare situation. For instance, a lawyer who does spend his time in court is called a trial lawyer which is an area that requires the advocate to be quick thinking and good speaker. Much of a trial lawyer's work is actually carried out on investigating a case he or she may be defending or prosecuting; talking to witnesses and arranging evidence for the case for example.

The legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society, from buying a home to crossing the street so lawyers hold positions of great responsibility and are obliged to follow a strict code of ethics. Some areas of law are so specialized that a lawyer may never have to appear in a courtroom even though they are all licensed to.

There are many areas where a lawyer can specialize from personal injury insurance to probate and even international laws. Environmental law for instance employs lawyers who will represent large corporations, construction companies and government bodies in areas of land development and protection for instance. Lawyers in this field may be arranging for their clients to carry out certain actions or just as easily representing them in civil actions resulting from work they have already carried out.

Digital media like CD's, computer games and software for instance is represented by laws protecting intellectual property rights, an area much on the news of late. Writing insurance policies, investigating claims protecting company assets and other frauds is part of the work carried out by lawyers who have specialized in that area of the law.

However, the vast majority of lawyers work within the private sector where they can devote their energies to either criminal or civil law. Criminal lawyers defend or prosecute persons charged with a crime whereas civil lawyers are dealing with civil disputes, usually between two parties.

Some lawyers handle only public interest cases both civil and criminal which may have an impact that affects the community in general and not just an individual so could involve anything from government regulations to property interests. Lawyers with a more rounded social conscience can work for charities of all types or legal-aid centers and whose work is more about helping the less well off.
