I have a new appreciation for my parents. (I seem to say that a lot now that I am a parent myself.) I recently spent a weekend at my daughter's softball tournament, and as we sat in the dust and heat, I recalled all of the many weekends my parents sat sweltering as they watched my brother and I as we participated in swim meets and baseball tournaments.
When a tournament starts there is a festive mode that make the event fun. Spirits are high on all teams and the brightly colored outfits provides a happy feeling. Then there are the food stands to you can get plenty to eat and drink. Be sure to have plenty of cash for possible entrance fees and of course the over priced hot dogs and soft drinks.
Of course if you are on a budget, bring your own provisions. That's tip #2. At a minimum a small cooler filled with soft drinks will save you quite a bit. And if you bring a bigger cooler you can include food like cheese sticks, fruit and more. In a backpack bring the staples like nuts, cookies and popcorn.
My tip #3 is that you don't always know what the weather will be at the end of the day so be prepared for just about anything. I don't know how it is where you live but our weather folks aren't all that accurate more than an hour or two out. So pack for all occasions. Some items I include in the 2nd backpack I take is sunscreen, hats, a long sleeved shirt or two and wet wipes. Sometimes if I think it will be hot, I'll even pack one of those mini fans that runs off of batteries.
Of course the next tip (we are up to tip 4 - if you've lost track) is the downtime and boredom issues. The first pertains to the time between games that always seems to last longer than it should. The second has to do with keeping my younger kids amused all day long. The remedies are both modern and traditional. We bring along handheld games, MP3 players, magazines, and good old fashioned cards.
At the day's end - even if victorious, your kids will tired and dirty and you'll fare no better. Plan ahead so the kids get fed quickly and cleaned. One tactic we use is to pick up some of our favorite food like pizza on the way home. Then I tell my kids that they can't have any pizza until they've cleaned up - that makes the cleaning go fast! Once my children are clean and fed I can relax. Whether it's soaking in a bubble bath or a quick shower and reading a favorite book or watching a classic movie, it's my reward to me as a parent!
The right accessories makes sitting outdoors pleasant. I love personalized tote bag. For me the next outdoor event is a wedding. Find great discount groomsman presents at EyeCandyGift.com
