It's hard to remember how kids managed to learn anything in school in the days before the Internet. Today's students have access to information on every conceivable topic as close as their PCs, and are now capable of learning at an astonishing rate.
Of course, it is also a favorite way for your child to keep in touch with friends and make new friends. With social networking sites like Zubby, MySpace, and Friendster, your child can keep in touch with all of their friends and have some fun while they're doing it.
In fact, social networking sites like these are amazingly popular with kids. Email is another way your child can keep in touch with friends or with family that live far away. However, with all the benefits of the internet, there also comes a ton of risks. Children talk to strangers online all the time.
Unfortunately, there are predators who will go online and look for children to converse with. So, while your child may think they are talking to a 13-year-old boy from another state, they could actually be talking to a 56-year-old man very close to your home.
Such possibilities are frightening indeed, and even more frightening is the frequency with which they occur. But you, as a parent, can take steps to protect your children by keeping tabs on exactly who is emailing them or communicating with them in online chat rooms.
Talk to your child about how he or she became acquainted with each online friend. If your child is suffering from low self-esteem, you should be even more vigilant. Most predators are highly skilled at creating a bond of trust in kids with self-image problems, and then horrifically abusing that trust.
Luckily, there are several new websites where you can check to see exactly who is emailing your child. That's right. All you have to enter is the email address of the person you're trying to find information about. You don't need to have their name, Social Security number, or address.
By typing in their email address, you can find their name, address, phone number, and background records. These background records are extremely important because they contain arrest records for federal and state correction facilities. They also contain the facts about misdemeanors and felonies this person may have been convicted of, and whether or not they are a sex offender.
Your role as a parent is both the most difficult and most rewarding one you will ever play. By taking responsibility for your kids' safety on the Internet, you will be going a very long way toward keeping them safe in your own home!
If you want to know who is e-mailing your children, don't rely on words - make sure by using a service that can find and trace e-mail addresses such as this one here: http://www.lookup-online.com/reverse-email
