When thinking about self defense most people take for granted that it must be self defense techniques or sprays, batons, tasers and so on but the true professionals know very well that something else has to be learned in order to practice real effective self defense. The most effective self defense has several steps and the first and most important one is awareness.

Awareness is a very important if not the most important part of complete self defense. An unaware person is more likely to be victim of a crime than an aware citizen. Awareness starts with recognition. You must recognize that you and everyone else on this planet are 24 hours a day a possible target for crime in one form or another. Crime does not only presents itself in the form of robbery or armed assault or rape. Crime has as many faces as there are people and only if you recognized for yourself that you are a possible victim you can take the first step to defending yourself in an effective way.

After recognizing the possibility that you or your beloved ones can become victims of crime you can start thinking about changing the parameters that condition the attacks according to your personal situation. The first one we take a look at is the place where we are. A dark alley gives the ideal place for an attack but attacks also can happen when you are taking a ride with the bus, pick pocket thieves are always looking out for an easy victim.

When recognizing and analyzing your personal situation you now know your vulnerabilities when it comes to defend yourself. You now know where and when you are in a situation that can be used against you to attack you. So the next step is to avoid these places or change the time of day or night so attacks are less likely to occur. For example don't go through the dark alley during nighttime only to get 5 minutes earlier at home. Take the longer road if this gives you more street illumination, more people around you that can help you when you are in distress. Dont open your wallet or purse so everyone can see there is money in it. Don`t visit places known to be a bad neighborhood. Don't go walking in the park with a mp3 player (you will lose an important part of your sensorial capacity. There have been many attacks on people with walkmans, mp3 players or ipods just because of this reason. There are many ways to avoid being a victim of crime and 80% of the things you can do are within the steps I just described. The solution is not only taking a course of self defense or buying defense sprays and other items.
