A small bathroom design may be your only option if you have limited space. The idea of designing for a cramped space doesn't have to be a burden though. There are some great ideas for small bathrooms. Here are some which you might want to consider for your bathroom.
Put Only What You Need
Ask yourself if you really want a bathroom that doubles as a living room. Chances are you will only really be spending a limited time in your bathroom. You are also not likely to be doing a lot of things in it. If you use your bathroom as it is meant to be used, then you don't need a lot of things in it. Get rid of extra fixtures and storage units. Keep only those that you can actually use for a little relaxation and for the essential functions of a bathroom.
Choose Small Items
Big fixtures will not just create the impression that you are in a small area. They really will eat up precious floor space. Fixtures and bathroom accessories however, do not always come in giant sizes. If possible, choose fixtures that are small but still comfortable to use. A slim, rectangular bath tub for example would be more appropriate for your bathroom than a large, square, Jacuzzi-type tub. Toilets and sinks also come in small sizes.
Move Up
You should ideally incorporate lots of floor space in your small bathroom design. This will give the feeling of having more room to move around in. How can this be possible without moving walls? You can actually make this happen by using the overhead space that usually gets taken for granted in big bathrooms. You can use this space for storage units like small cabinets, towel racks and hanging hampers. You can also provide more floor space by choosing a hanging or corner sink with no base.
Go for Light Colors
Sometimes, the spacious appeal of a bathroom is all in the way we perceive it. You can actually influence the way people see your bathroom by wisely choosing your colors. Your tiles, accents, paint and even your fixtures should all be in light shades. Aside from creating the illusion of space, light colors are also easy and refreshing to look at. Dark colored fixtures tend to tell our eyes that the space is too cramped. They also create a somber or severe atmosphere.
Decorate with Accents
The limited area isn't your only concern when you design for your bathroom. You should also seek to improve the overall appearance and appeal of your bathroom. In most cases, you will need it too to help you unwind and relax. You may not be able to create a full home spa in your small bathroom. You may however be able to add a little spice to it. Use small tile appliqus to improve the look of your tiles. You can also distribute potpourri sachets and small enclosed scented candles in small areas.
These are only some small bathroom design ideas. If you consider exploring a little more, you might realize that there is actually so much more that you can do with a small bathroom.
