It is important to remember that if one owns any kind of wooden sheds that they will have to be maintained on a regular basis. If you do care for and maintain your shed you will find that it is better able to protect what is kept within. Below we take you through the steps that you will need to carry out to ensure that your wooden shed is protected.
As you will soon discover either by visiting your local DIY store or searching online that there are many different kinds of exterior finishes one can use for covering a shed. But what you choose depends on what kind of finish you want and what color it is you would like your shed to be.
1. The first thing that one will need to do before you actually start work on protecting your shed is to ensure that you have the right equipment to hand. Ideally you should have a power washer, an electric sander, a foam brush or a staining pad or a nylon paintbrush and of course not forgetting the stain. It is best if you choose a solid stain as this not only hides the wood grain but will last much longer as well. But if you want some of the wood grain to show through then opt for a semi-solid stain instead.
2. After choosing between either a solid or semi-solid stain you now need to decide whether to go for an oil based or water based one. An oil based stain is ideal if you live in a place where the weather conditions are harsh as it can penetrate the wood much better and is very durable. However, the water-based ones are a much safer alternative and they are resistant to mildew, their colors last longer.
3. Once the stain has been chosen you can now move on to the next stage, which is preparing the surface of the wood. You need to remove any other stain or paint on it that was applied previously along with dust, dirt and debris. This is where the power washer comes in handy and use one that is specifically designed for cleaning wood surfaces. It is a good idea to use the sander before you wash the shed down to help get rid of the more stubborn paint and dirt on the woods surface.
4. Next you need to allow time for the wood to dry other before you actually start using the stain on the cleaned surface. It is a good idea if you wash the shed down on a day that is hot and sunny, as this will ensure that the wood dries a lot quicker.
5. Only have the wood on the shed has dried out completely can you now start to apply the stain you have chosen. It is best if you do one wall at a time make sure that you cover the surface of it evenly and quickly with the stain to prevent any kind of overlapping to occur. This will then help to ensure that the finish of each coat is flawless.
6. After you have applied coat number one to the surface of your wooden sheds wall you need to give this time to dry and then apply a second coat. You may find that you might actually need to apply a third coat of stain to your shed to ensure that it is properly protected, and it is a good idea to follow the recommendations that the manufacturer of the stain provides.
It can be difficult when picking one of the various wooden sheds available at online shops, but following the guidelines above should help you decide. Garden sheds can be very useful in the garden as well as blending in with the scenery.
