"Go Green" isn't just the new buzz phrase. Most of us want to be more environmentally conscious and it's easier than you might think! There are easy steps we can all take that will help improve our personal health as well as the health of the planet. Small dietary changes can have a big impact on the environment. Read on to discover simple ways to make a difference.
The first simple step is to plan, plan, plan. Shop carefully to "Go Green". Check out your weekly grocery ads and create a healthy menu and shopping list. Don't wait to make dietary decisions when you're tired, hungry, and frustrated. That's when you reach for the easy food and your plan goes out the window.
Use local, seasonal produce. This will help cut down on shipping costs and decrease our dependence on oil. In addition, you can feel good about supporting local farmers, the local economy, and eating the freshest produce available. Local produce may cost a little more but it will last longer and be better for your family. Try a vegetable that you've never had before and ask for healthy cooking tips.
The commercial meat industry requires an excess of energy. Plan vegetarian meals for your family at least twice a week. Plant protein tends to be cheaper than meat protein, so use beans to add fiber and other nutrients to your meals. As your family grows to accept meatless meals, gradually add more.
Instead of choosing vegetables that are prepackaged in individually wrapped containers, choose your produce loose from bins. Don't buy prepackaged lettuce for your salads. Buy a head of lettuce and make your own. You'll be surprised how much fresher it tastes! Try out your farming skills. If you've never grown anything before, start small. Grow basil for pesto or mint for mojitos. If you don't have a big yard, plant in pots on your patio or deck. Tomatoes and peppers are just two vegetables that grow easily in pots.
Drink tap water. Purchase a reusable neoprene bottle and fill it up at home. Use a filter if you prefer the taste. Americans throw away 70 million plastic water bottles each day! Only small percentages are recycled. Imagine the shipping costs for something as heavy as water.
Pack your lunch at home and take it to work with you. Buy a reusable lunch bag or box to save plastic and paper. Take silverware from home and replace it each night. You will save money and calories in addition to making an environmental impact. Research shows that 1.8 million tons of takeout containers and utensils end up in landfills.
You can "Go Green" with little effort. It doesn't have to be complicated. Follow these basic guidelines and make environmentally friendly choices. Save your diet and help create a healthier future for the planet.
