Sometimes it is best to look to the past for inspiration in style, rather than always trying to find the next best thing. In gardening, for example, the Victorian era has a unique, unmatched, classic style that is often overlooked today. Their style is certainly worth replicating.

Many of the plants from that era can fit easily on a window sill. The Boston fern, for example, is easy to care for and is becoming popular again with window gardeners. It has evergreen foliage and needs indirect sunlight for healthy growth. It works well to have Boston ferns in a hanging pot, so you will need a pot one inch bigger than he one the fern came in, some potting soil, and a plant hook to hang the pot.

After you transfer the Boston fern to the larger pot and fill it in with fresh potting soil, you should make sure that the soil is packed tight. Watering the plant thoroughly will remove any remaining air pockets. When you install the plant hook, make sure you are properly install it and that it can hold the weight of the pot, plant, and wet soil. All that is left to do is hang the plant, water it when the soil is dry, an rotate it occasionally.

Another Victorian style houseplant that you could use in your home is the spider plant. They are strong plants that have green or green and white foliage. You can choose whether you want the graceful appearance that comes from allowing the baby plants to grow, or the sleek appearance that results from removing the baby plants.

The cactus is another classic plant that is great in homes. There are so many varieties of cacti. To truly make a visual impact, don't be afraid to put 5 or more cacti in an area. Cacti are very hardy plants, so they are easy to care for. You can plant them in a big rectangular box that runs the length of your window sill. The soil should be made specifically for cactus plants. After that, simply remember to not water the plants very often. Overwatering can kill cacti, since their natural habitat is the dry desert.

The African Violet is another great option. It is a simple plant with velvety rounded leaves. The center of the plant contains a group of small flowers. There are many different varieties of African Violets, so you can have the option of picking your favorites and grouping them together.

Once the interior of your window is full of flowers, you may not feel fulfilled. In this case, you can build a window box outside the window to plant more flowers in. Geraniums work very well here. They do not live through the winter, however.

The beauty of classic house plants and houseplant care have stood the test of time, so don't forget to acknowledge their beauty. It is not always best to follow every single current trend in style.
