A knife is actually quite a simple item, when you think about it most people will know what makes up a knife. From the blades, grinds and handles. There's no doubting that knives can be extremely beautiful items. There are different ways to produce a knife, depending on the effect that you are going for. You should read the rest of this article so that you can find out some of the basic finishes and techniques which are required to make a knife. With the right processes you will be able to create a beautiful knife which will last for a very long time to come. The finish of the knife won't actually affect the functionality of the knife in anyway, all it will do is change how the knife appears.
Finishing
A jeweled metal knife is normally done from the inside, this creates a beautiful finish when looking at the mouth. A stonewash finish can be applied using abrasive materials to make a beautiful unique and antique item. Vibed finishing can also be used to make the knife look a little worn, it has smaller abrasions than stonewashed finishes. Stonewashed finishes are quite rough, whereas vibed finishes are slightly more subtle.
Heat Treatment
Annealing is a very popular way to make a strong and easy to use knife. This heats the knife up as much as possible before allowing it to cool, this hardens the metal and makes it more durable. Annealing processes can be used to make the knife much stronger. Another option is tempering, this is where two types of heat treatment are used to control the amount of cooling. Heat treatment can be used to produce a knife with a unique and interesting look.
Steels
Most knife experts will tell you that not all stainless steel is the same. It is important to use stainless steel which has a chromium content of over 13%. This really does make it stainless steel which won't suffer from any stains. It is still important to take care of the knife when it's made as it could still rust if it is not treated correctly. Nobody would want to spend so long creating a beautiful knife only to let it get damaged. There are other types of materials which you could consider using which are sometimes much more durable. Damascus steel is one material which may be suitable, this uses two or more metals creating a very strong material. This material is one of the strongest materials you can use for a knife but you still don't want to use a chain saw sharpener to sharpen the blade.
The finish of the knife won't actually change how the knife works, all it will do is change how the knife looks. We all like pretty things, so why not spend some extra time deciding on beautiful finishes for your knife?
