Many homeowners who want to renovate their kitchen or upgrade the room choose the relatively easy method of adding new paint or wallpaper, along with an attractive trim of some kind. But this simple task is not always enough for some. A few people decide that a new kitchen counter arrangement is called for, with new counter tops that will add beauty and efficiency to the working room.

Homeowners are often amazed at how much the kitchen can change with the addition of new counter tops, even if the cabinets and wall colors remain the same. The addition of new tops, in a rich hardwood, a man-made finish or even some sort of stone-like finish, can turn a standard kitchen into a bright and welcoming area in which to prepare and serve meals. Most designers and contractors highly recommend paying particular attention to the kitchen because it is, after all, the room that gets the most use. The kitchen, traditionally, also is the room that sets a certain atmosphere for the home, showing visitors what kind of folks live in the home.

While the older counter tops in many homes were made with a Formica finish or some sort of wood mixture, they were still considered great workspaces. One of the drawbacks of these materials, however, is that the old counter tops can be hard to remove. This may be, in fact, one of the most time-consuming parts of the kitchen remodelling job.

It would certainly be easier to completely remove the entire counter top, so it isn't necessary to struggle with removing just the surface Formica or veneer. This may be a bit more expensive, but it can save time. In addition, the new materials available for kitchen counter tops and the many colors and designs make complete replacement an inviting idea.

While many homeowners feel quite comfortable removing old counter tops and installing new ones, others may feel even this limited project is beyond their skills and experience. As with any remodelling task, the homeowner should take some time at first to plan and measure, to ensure the project will proceed smoothly after the materials are purchased.

It may be a good idea to enlist the help of someone willing to take on a bit of physical work. Removing old counter tops is usually a job for two people who can address the situation together. Tip: Remove all items from the cabinets. Take all the drawers out. Not only does this make cleanup easier and protect the drawer contents, it will also clear the way for seeing how the counter tops are attached, as well as making it easier to remove any nails, screws etc.

After making sure that the top surface of the cabinets is clean and even, the new counter top can be set in place and attached with the screws, brackets etc. that are provided. Many homeowners who take on this project themselves find it is relatively simple, if done with patience and careful measurements. While there are relatively few steps to be taken in kitchen counter top removal/replacement, the task can, and should, take some time if it is to be done well.
