Well, it's time. Your kitchen just is not meeting your family's needs any more. You need to remodel. But you've heard about what a hassle it can be. How can you stay sane?
The answer is in planning and patience. You need both to see this project through to the end. Here's how to do it.
First, figure out the scope of the project. Is it just a simple fix that will take a day? Or will it be a total remodel? Try to figure out reasonable time frames for each part of the project, and then allow additional time for the unexpected. Try to write out a preliminary schedule so you know what should be happening. Be sure to write it in pencil to allow for the changes that will come up.
If work crews are coming in, get an idea of when they will come and for how long. Is it possible that multiple crews can come at the same time? The job may go quicker if the plumbing and electrical people can come on the same day. However, if one part of the job must be finished before another one started, it is good to know that in advance too. For example, be sure new appliances are installed after the flooring is put in. But be sure to paint before the new floor is put in to avoid spills on the new stuff.
Next, plan where your kitchen's contents will go in the interim. Do you have space in your garage for the stove, the refrigerator and the dishwasher? If not, where can you put them? Where will you store the things usually kept in the kitchen cabinets ? Can your family and pets maneuver around them? What will you do for meals while your appliances are out of commission? What will your family do for plates, glasses and tableware during construction? As long as you have some ideas for these matters, you will do fine.
Be sure to bear with your family members and the work crews. Everyone is doing their best in a very trying circumstance. The work crews don't know your house so they can't plan for every contingency. You also may not be their only project at the time, much as you'd like them to be.
You and your family also have to continue to live your lives while construction is taking place. If you don't work well with chaos, try to find away to work around it. Go to the library or a local coffeehouse if you need time away. Keep the kids occupied so they don't get in the way of the work.
Don't worry. This too shall pass. Sooner or later the work will be finished and you will have a lovely kitchen to show for all the upheaval.
