Are you remodeling your home and installing tiles? While it may seem trivial, you'll need to put some thought into the grout you'll be using for your tiles. Grout will make a huge difference to the look and quality of your tile installation. Here are some tips to buying, applying and maintaining grout.

Choosing a color will be one thing on your to do list. White is no longer the only choice out there; there are several colors from which to choose. In fact, white will show dirt and stains more than darker colors. Choose a grouting color that will match your tiles or perhaps a color that will contrast if you want your tiling to really stand out. Also keep in mind that grout color may change and fade over time.

Make sure you invest in the right tools for the job. "Making do" with what you have will show in the quality of your work. Have tools to apply the grout such as a palette knife, spatula and trowel. These tools will help you get the grout uniform and level. It will also ensure the grout is not higher than the level of the tiles. Also make sure you have sponges and a bucket of water handy so you can wipe away excess. If you miss places or have holes in the grout then it's not only unsightly but it can trap mold and bacteria. You will also need a good table saw for cutting the tile.

Correct tile spacing is essential so take the time to layout the tiles with the desired spacing before gluing them into place. Determine how much grout you want showing; with smaller tiles you'll generally want less space between tiles. It's recommended that you purchase spacers so you can keep your tiles evenly and consistently spaced.

Before securing your tiles in place, make sure the ground is level. This may not seem too important but the grout will bring out the flaws. Uneven and sloping grout is not a problem with the grout; it's a problem with the tiles being placed on unleveled flooring.

After you apply the grout you'll need to apply a sealer. Sealing your grout is essential to protect the grout from stains and wear. Grout generally will wear faster than your tiles so it's important to do all you can to delay it. Applying the sealer is not an easy process and should not be rushed. Like the grout, it's important that you don't get any sealer on the tiles themselves. It's a tedious process but will be well worth the effort.

After everything is done and installed your job isn't done. You'll need to clean and maintain the grout even more than the tile. Even with a sealer, tile has a tendency to absorb liquids so dirt can cause stains and mildew can quickly grow. Keep your tile clean to ensure a long life and beautiful flooring.
