Tagging along your pets in one, if not all, of your travels is widely accepted. Package tours now accommodate pets in their itinerary. There are hotels catering to pets and pet owners. This is a good set-up so that they would be able to stay together for the duration of their travel. But prior to making grand travel preparations, be sure to consider your pet's preferences, health status, and other pertinent information. All possible areas should be covered so that both you and your pet enjoy that much awaited travel. Here are some tips on how to better prepare for that all-important trip for you and your pet:
1. It is important that you are very familiar with your pet and all of his habits. Animals are like people in some aspects. Animals may be prone to motion sickness just like humans. The best way to avoid this during the trip is to train your pet to ride a vehicle. You may do this by driving around the neighborhood with your him.
2. Consult with your veterinarian prior to traveling. Ask your vet on how to properly care for your pet while on a trip and ask for medical tips you can use in case of emergency. You may also opt to tell him about your road trips in your neighborhood and your pet's reaction to it.
3. Arm yourself with information regarding the trip you are going to take-the transportation, accommodation, food, companions, and other important information. There are hotels nowadays which cater to pet owners and their pets. There are hotel amenities specifically built for pets. If you do not know any of these hotels, you may try surfing the internet and look if they are situated near your travel destination. You may also try searching in your local libraries for listings.
4. Bbe sure to make your pet feel comfortable during the entire trip. Bring along items he is familiar with such as pet carriers, toys, and other familiar items from home. Your pet will surely feel more at ease.
5. Skip water and food immediately before boarding the vehicle you would take for the trip. As with humans, eating or drinking sometimes upset the stomach thereby making travel uncomfortable. You may feed your pet 30 minutes or 1 hour prior to departure.
6. If you have your own car and you are at the wheel, remember to pace your travel so that there will be enough rest periods in between. This is important so that your pet will have time to stretch and relax. You may look for a park within the area. You may also take this time to feed him before another long trip.
Remember:
- Have your pet checked by the veterinarian prior to the trip and ask for a clearance stating the health status of your pet.
- Be very sure that your pet has all the necessary shots AND is tagged accordingly. This is helpful for pet identification.
- Make sure that once you start the trip, your pet is properly fastened and within seeing or hearing distance.
Traveling with a pet is a great way to relax. In order to avoid any untoward incident happening during your vacation, make it a point to plan and research ahead of time so everything will go as smooth as possible and barring occurrence of any major problems and/or emergencies.
