If you are a golfer that really enjoys the game and you want to combine your love of golf with a vacation, then this article will give you some ideas to plan the perfect golf vacation. The initial idea opens up dozens of possibilities for a family trip or a golfing-buddies trip.

But before rushing off to hit the little white ball in the sunshine of another state or another country, every golf vacationer should take some time to plan the perfect golf vacation by thinking about what the ideal golf trip should include.

The same with any vacation, you have to include some key elements when planning a golf trip; how long will you be staying, how do you plan to pay for the trip, what is the estimated cost, what other extras will you include, and so forth. The most important consideration is if any of your family or friends don't golf, then what other activities would they enjoy. The next thing to consider is where you want to play golf; near the beach, in the mountains, or on the links of England or Scotland.

Some fundamental planning at the beginning should remove any little problems for a better chance of a perfect golf vacation. When you start to plan the perfect golf vacation it is a good idea to write out some points about an ideal golf trip by dividing the points into separate areas to focus on. Below are a few categories to help you get started:

    * Set a season of the year for the trip (a few weeks in the future; a few months in the future)

    * Decide how many days or rounds of golf the trip will include (don't overdo it!)

    * Decide on a range of prices for the full trip ($1500 to $3500, $4000 to $6000, for example)

    * How many people who will be in the group

    * Decide on who will go on the trip - just golfers, family etc.

    * Get some golf trip information together from golf magazines, library, Web sites etc.

    * If you have friends who have been on a golf vacation, ask them if they made their own plans, purchased a golf package vacation, used a travel agent, etc.

Of course, you can follow up this original planning by making all the travel, hotel and golf arrangements on your own. Here are a few tips if you want to take care of the arrangements yourself.

If you decide to drive to the destination of your golf vacation, you will be able to carry all your golf equipment in the car with you, which will solve your transportation needs. If this is the way that you decide to get to your golf site, take a minute to check that your golf club set is complete. It may sound obvious, but it would not be much fun when you arrive at a beautiful golf location, to find out that your putter is missing because one of your kids took it out of your bag to play with.

One way to begin making your own arrangements, without the assistance of a travel agent, is to contact an organization in the area you are interested in. For example, golfers can get in touch with the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina group that specializes in golf vacations for that area. You can do the same with the many golf courses in Arizona. The Phoenix area has similar assistance available, as do many resort destinations.

After you have selected your favorite golf courses, you would then contact the accommodation you chose and speak to the Golf Director. You can book your lodgings and your preferred tee times right there. This is a good combination of being able to make your own decisions but taking advantage of the local knowledge of a golf vacations specialist.

You may find yourself with a few challenges and extra work if you do the planning on your own, but you will take pleasure in the extra freedom and sense of success. You can set your sights high and then retreat to a more realistic level if your budget isn't enough for a golf trip to Scotland, Portugal, or Hawaii.

Once you have your accommodation in place, you should plan to play courses that are within a practical distance; the least amount of traveling to and from the golf courses is essential. These arrangements should be made as early as possible so that your group has the best opportunities to be had. If you change your mind and you wait too long to change your plans, you could end up with undesirable rooms and tee times. Here are some recommendations for acquiring the accommodation first:

    * Consider a rental house instead of a hotel for larger groups

    * Try to have a separate bed for each person

    * Consider the driving time to and from the golf courses if you choose a rental home over hotel rooms on or near a golf course

    * Consider early morning tee times if you want an additional 18 holes in the afternoon. Being close to the house makes 36 holes doable

    * Plan for lodging even earlier if you want to play golf and watch a major tournament that is taking place in the area. Combining your trip with a professional tournament adds some extra flavor to a golf vacation.

One more thing to take into consideration when you plan the perfect golf vacation; will you play one round a day, two rounds, or can you play as many as you wish? Make sure you have this detail arranged before leaving. Finally, make sure you fully understand what exactly is included in your golf vacation and what is not. Taking a few minutes to get all the details right will eradicate the small problems that you may encounter once you are at your golf destination.
