Howard Martin is co-author of The HeartMath Solution, Executive Vice President of HeartMath LLC, a research institution that studies the relationship between the heart and the brain, and is the developer of the Nightingale-Conant tape series, The HeartMath Method.

Perception, emotion, and overall health are influenced by the communications between the heart and brain. Many believe the heart is just as important to intelligence as the brain. If it's the brain that tells you what to think, then it's the heart that tells you how to think.

When speaking to others, your brain directs your thoughts. Similarly, your heart directs your actions. It directs "how" you say things including your tone of voice and at which point you should speak more aggressively or give in. For quite a number of years, such ideas have only been held in the philosophical or religious realms.

HeartMath LLC wants to change the way people look at the heart. Actually, it's the reason "math" is included in the company's name. This math isn't about numbers. It's the representation of understanding the heart as an organ that sends healing signals to the brain and body.

Howard Martin believes that the heart sends messages through the body in four distinct ways. First, the heart is made up on complex nervous system cells. (The nervous system is the body's electrical pathway including the brain and spinal column.) When researchers map the pathway of neural traffic through the body, they've found that the heart sends more messages to the brain than it receives back.

The second way that the heart sends messages through the body is in blood pressure waves. These waves of blood through arteries and veins mediate changes in the electrical activity of the brain causing a type of biophysical communication.

Third, hormones are involved in the communication process. Howard Martin believes that some of the body's hormones like cortisol and oxytocin are produced and circulated by the heart. Cortisol is the body's stress hormone. Oxytocin has been labeled the "love hormone" because it is more abundant during periods of emotional activities like sex or childbirth.

Finally, the heart is both a biological organ and an electrical one. This is why cardiologists are able to perform EKG tests or implant pacemakers to regulate the rhythm of the heart. Electrical energy passes through the skin and extends into a person's space for about four feet. Positive or negative electrical energy can be sensed by others, allowing them to know your mood before ever speaking a word.
