It's no longer a secret - if it ever was a secret - it was more of a discovery that there are certain foods that will burn more calories when digested than they actually add to your hips. And what a discovery! It just made sense. Remember when there were the lists of things that burned calories: walking, jogging, having sex, jump rope? Someone did the research on how much your body burns when eating a particular food.

To understand how they work we need a definition of burning - and that is just about anything that gives off energy in heat and uses a fuel. The fuel that we're talking about are the fat burning foods and the energy is given off when they are digested. I'm not sure if they are more complex and thus require more time and energy to digest, but I do know that the whole idea is that they use more calories to digest than they leave on your hips.

But this isn't the diet to end all diets. It's not going to change your body fat percentage as you sit in front of the monitor. And it is amazing how many of us lead a lifestyle that puts us in front of computer screens for the better part of a day as a way to make a living. When we do get up for anything, it's either the call of nature or for more food. Certainly not much exercise. That's the primary reason many of us are overweight in the first place.

A list of fat burning foods includes these popular items - lemons, turnips, mushrooms, grapefruit, broccoli, limes, beans, cherries, walnuts, dried fruits, fava beans, carrots, pineapple, oranges, pumpkins, spinach, blackberries, and eggplants. And now I totally know why mom always had some sort of grapefruit diet going on and my mother-in-law preaches her lemon diet to anyone she feels has been too many times to the trough. They both work and the reason is because they burn more calories than they put on you.

As you start thinking about these fat burning foods, and how you can fit them into your lifestyle, it's not as easy as just going to the grocer and buying a bag of oranges. Any diet needs to be entered in with moderation. You need to also work in a good exercise routine that will accelerate your metabolism which will enable the fat burning foods to work that much better. Your waistline will start to shrink as you stick to the foods and exercise. But again, go slowly and don't burn out on this.

The food list is great, but I must mention proteins. You need to get a healthy amount of lean protein such as salmon, lean beef, and chicken breast. I've found that fatty foods such as pork, although they have a good amount of protein, don't help the fat burning foods as they saturate the diet with animal fats. And with the salmon, you're able to make so many different creations, plus it's loaded with great omega oils we so vitally need for healthy cell structure.

Of course you knew I'd throw in a word of caution. Make sure that you don't add a bunch of carbs or a bunch of fats to this diet. These fat burning foods work well with each other and with little else. One thing that won't work is dumping your normal level of fattening butters and oils, high starch side dishes with your fat burners. They will counteract each other and you will see no progress and think the program doesn't work.

Finally, I found the best way to watch these work is with a daily food journal. Write in this journal everything you eat and drink within your day. It will quickly show you things about portions and the frequency in which you are eating - or overeating. And make sure you take good breaks during the day to get out and exercise. That alone will help more than any dieting and make you feel re-energized and set to go!
