    One trip to the bookstore will show that dieting in America is more than a fad; it's a fullblown phenomenon. With a record number of people obese in the nation, sometimes it seems that there are even more diets than there are people who need them. With so many options available, sifting through them to find the perfect one can be quite a challenge. Adding to the confusion is the fact that each person's body responds to a diet differently from other people's.

    You may be one of the many people who love to snack, we all do and there is nothing wrong with enjoying the odd snack here and there. The problem is when you snack too much, making your diet nonexistent and you end up unhealthy because of it. What if there was a diet to help combat this problem. What if there were foods that enable you to lose weight just by eating them?

    Well there are foods like that and there are many foods that burn more calories than you could ever imagine. These food types are actually called 'negative calorie foods' and they burn more calories than you consume by eating them. Making it much easier to lose those unwanted love handles!

    Let's be honest: "Negative calorie" is a misnomer. No food can truly have a calorie count of less than zero. What is meant by the term is that some foods have so few calories compared to the amount of energy required to digest them, that at the end of the process you've actually burned more calories than the food contains. So the net result is, in fact, a "negative calorie burn". This makes them a dieter's perfect dream food.

    Equally important is how these foods make you feel. Health experts note the importance of having a feeling of fullness in making a diet successful. And most of these "negative calorie foods" do an excellent job of giving you that full feeling. As a result, you're less likely to snack on fatty, calorie-heavy snack foods.

    So what, then, are some of these healthy snack foods that actually burn calories? Here are a few:

    Apricots, with their sweet, full flavor provide an excellent alternative to fatty desserts.

    Cucumbers are good foods to add to most meals, but slice them up, and they make good finger snacks also.

    Carrots - Great to snack on instead of chips or sweets.

    Strawberries have such a rich, sweet flavor, and are the perfect small size, that these are a nice alternative to candy.

    Watermelon with its juicy, sweet taste provides a snack that is a real treat and experience.

    Tomatoes are low in calories and make great additions for salads and sandwiches.

    Cauliflower - Great to eat with literally anything, and can be cooked in many different ways.

    Zucchini is another food that can be cooked in a variety of ways, and has only 15 calories per 100 grams.

    Apples - Apple is quite difficult to digest therefore making it a great food to burn off calories. Your body will work hard to digest the apple and with only 81 calories in a standard apple you will be losing the pounds before you know it.

    Hot Chilli Peppers: Okay, maybe you won't be snacking on this one by itself too much. But peppers make for an outstanding condiment! Skip the mayo on that sandwich or the high-fat dressing on the salad. Instead, replace them with hot chilli peppers. You'll love the taste and your body will love the low-calorie count.

    There are many more negative calorie foods that you can try. Just check out a diet book at the local store or search the Internet. Before you know it, you'll be an expert on healthy snacking.
