Acne is a disorder that literally affects millions of people across the world. It knows no age, gender, or race. Many people suffer from acne and have a hard time finding the right acne treatment that best suits their specific problem and needs.

The one thing about acne is that there are several different kinds and several different causes. This is what makes choosing the right acne treatment so difficult. The best acne treatment will not only benefit your acne problem, but also benefit your skin, which should be the ultimate priority for you.

It is imperative that you discuss both your disease and your treatment choices with your dermatologist before you begin treatment. If your acne is particularly severe, it is especially important that you see a dermatologist and don't just try to treat your acne yourself. Not only may you waste money on something you buy that doesn't work, but you could in fact make your acne worse. You need to learn everything you can about your disorder, including what causes and what cures it. This can help you choose the right acne treatment.

For example, a particular kind of bacterium known as P. Acnes is actually the cause of one type of acne. This is important to realize, because there are two major medications used to treat acne. These are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Benzyl peroxide actually works to kill the bacterium that causes acne. Salicylic acid helps exfoliate your skin, which gently "unclogs" follicles, the cause of most inflammation. It also helps prevent its return.

These two medications are both available over the counter. They are just two of several acne treatments you can use to help take care of your acne. However, you need to know what each one does to know whether it can work for your skin type. This is another reason you need to talk your dermatologist before you begin any type of treatment.

There are many kits available on the market that claim to treat acne. In general, they provide a series of products meant to work in conjunction with each other to help treat your acne. They usually contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as their major acne ingredient, along with other products meant to do such things as sooth and tone skin after the active ingredient (benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) has been applied.

With these kits, however, you have to take care. This is because each of these kits is designed for a particular skin type. You need to choose a kit specifically designed for your skin type, such as dry skin. You can actually cause yourself harm or even make your acne worse if you choose improperly. For example, an acne kit meant for dry skin is meant to both treat the acne and moisturize the skin at the same time. A kit designed for oily skin contains drying agents that "soak up" the excess oil and keep the source of the oil in check as well. Therefore, if you have dry skin and use an oily skin treatment, you could actually harm your skin and perhaps even make your acne worse.

Of course, while all of these acne treatments may help, nothing can take the place of living a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that the foods you eat could actually aggravate your skin and create acne? It is a fact that what you eat determines your skin type. Did you also know that how much you sleep and how much water you drink can actually help or hurt your acne treatment as well? You want to make sure that you are getting a full eight hours of sleep, giving your skin time to rejuvenate and regenerate. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your skin is hydrated and ready to go.
