One of the most widely known procedures in the world of plastic surgery is the procedure commonly known as the facelift. Performed on both women and men - a unique idea in plastic surgery - this procedure gains in popularity year after year due to its anti-aging effects.

The facelift has been around a long time, over 100 years! The first facelift was performed by Eugene Hollander in 1901, and its popularity has just kept growing since that time. The facelift joins liposuction and breast augmentation in the top three most popular plastic surgery procedures.

Newer procedures do essentially the same thing, although the cuts are smaller and less noticeable. They may still be placed along the hairline, but the doctor may use smaller incisions just so he or she can place instruments under the skin and pull the tissues taut with endoscopic technique.

Patients who undergo facelift procedures usually have them done at a surgery center or hospital, because they will require anesthesia. The type of anesthesia used for a facelift is general anesthesia - due to the complexity of the surgery and the time required for surgery.

Recovery time varies for patients who have facelifts - those who need to have a larger incision and need to have more tissue cut away and pulled up to correct deeper wrinkles and more aging may require more recovery time than those with a less complex surgery.

Don't choose to get a facelift without doing a lot of research. There are many different ways to make yourself look younger - including other plastic surgery procedures that require less invasive techniques. Your plastic surgeon will be sure to let you know the right thing for you.
