Deciding to stop the cycle of alcohol abuse is a difficult one. For many the first step is the hardest, but here are 7 tips to help you on the path to sobriety.
1) Stop Drinking for Yourself - You have to want to take this step for it to work. The decision cannot be only for your family, significant other, or whoever might be asking you to stop. If you don't do it for yourself, you are already placing an obstacle in your path.
2) Physical Exercise - Limited studies have revealed that the people who get exercise while trying to stay sober are less likely to relapse. Theory suggests that this might be due to exercise having the tendency to keep a person in a more relaxed state.
3. Give yourself rewards - People forget this aspect of recovery, and it is an important one. Rewards help to keep you in the game. The more frequent the better.
4) No Guilt Trips for Setbacks - Anger and frustration for a temporary setback is counterproductive and will make anyone feel like quitting. Don't worry about it if it happens. Try to identify what caused the setback and work toward preventing it from happening again. Focus on a positive future, not a negative past.
5) Seek Outside Help - Reach outside of what you already know. There are so many options available from A.A., to therapy and other support groups that can help you to see yourself and your addiction in different ways. Facing all of the issues that come with both alcoholism and ending it can be overwhelming. Many of these issues are probably factors that led you to drink in the first place.
6) Seek Company - There is safety in numbers, provided they are all good role models. For those who are single, this can be tough. If you can't surround yourself with people, get out more which helps create a fresh outlook on life.
7) Develop a New Alcohol Free Routine - Get up earlier, include some exercise into the daily routine, the potential is endless. After all a day without alcohol is a new routine in itself.
Everyone is an individual, and will have to operate on his or her own unique timetable. There are no rules or prescribed time limits to step from addiction to sobriety. Go at your own pace.
