When most people think of slow cooking, they actually think of the Crock-Pot. Crock-Pot is not the name of the slow cooker, it is a product. It is used as the general term for a slow cooker much like Coke is used as the general term for soda.

Naxon Utilities Corporation was the original creator of the slow cooker. It was called the Naxon Beanery All-Purpose Cooker. You?ve probably never heard of it. That?s because Rival Co purchase the company in 1971 and renamed it the Crock-Pot.

The slow cooker approach to cooking works through a method suggested by the name. Instead of whipping a meal together, the ingredients are allowed to simmer and meld for as long as 12 hours to bring out a fuller taste.

The slow cooker works by applying a round about heating method. The cooking vessel actually sits within a ceramic shell that has heating elements at the bottom and sides. This provides an even heating experience and is perfect for meals such as stews.

Slow cookers are also advantageous because of their time requirement. A meal that takes 8 to 12 hours to cook is in synchronicity with the lives of most people. You can fire up the cooker before leaving for work and have the food ready when you get home.

Slow cookers have to other advantages that fit our hectic lifestyles. First, they are very safe. You can leave them on all day without any problems or fire scares. Second, they use little energy even when on for 10 hours or more.

What can you cook with slow cookers? Just about anything. There are even pan accessories for breads. Soups, stews and the like are obviously some of the best, but the vast number of recipes make just about everything an option.

The slow cooker is a flexible and fairly simple way to cook up a health meal for you and your family. It should be part of any kitchen.
