Having your own small business is a dream come true for many hard working individuals. They want the freedom of working on their own and doing things their way. In most cases there are years of working for someone else under their belt that they can draw experience from. There are more small businesses than ever with the ability to open one online as well.

Too many small business owners fail to see why they need one. They may be content with using their personal credit cards and then paying that bill when they get income from the business. You want to keep your finances for each one separated though. You also need to work to establish some credit for your business. Hopefully it will be able to expand and take on a life of its own.

It the eyes of other people and other lenders, the fact that you have initiated some form of credit for your small business says a lot. Statistically more than half of all small businesses will shut down during the first year. Lack of income and lack of planning are the leading reasons for this. With a business credit card it shows you plan to stay around and that you have a plan of action when you don't have money readily available to use.

There will always be items you need to buy for any small business. Using a credit card for them and then immediately paying it off shows you to be responsible with that credit. As a result you will see your interest rates dropping and your credit limit increasing. You don't want to get into the habit of carrying a balance on the business credit card unless you absolutely have to.

Having a business credit card doesn't mean you can just go buy everything you want though. Be very conscious about what you need right now and what you can do without. Strive to keep your overhead expenses very low. As your business brings in profits you can allocate some of those funds to buy things you want but don't really need to use in your business.

The biggest issue to remember is that you don't want to have your personal information or assets tied to that business credit card in any way. Some credit card companies will tell you to do so in order to get a lower rate. This may be tempting but it can lead to problems with your personal finances if your business doesn't work out. You want it to be able to stand alone so work for that from the very start.

Take your time to shop around for the right credit card for your type of business. Don't expect to get an unbelievable deal from the very start. New businesses are high risk so your rate of interest will be high. Yet if you pay the balance each month it won't hurt you. Find out what special perks they can offer you as well such as cash back rewards programs.

Credit cards are very important for small businesses so get at least one in place as soon as you can. You never know when you will need to access that credit in a hurry. Even if you don't get the best terms or credit limit to start with, do what you can and work to improve from there. Establishing your business credit takes time but getting a credit card is a sure way to get the ball rolling.
