Do you know when and when not to wear a novelty necktie or do you sometimes make social faux pas by wearing one on inappropriate occasions?

It's a great thing to have a sense of humor, there is no doubt. Being able to see the funny side of things will help you get through some tough times and be more philosophical than friends or colleagues who are humorless.

But showing you have a sense of humor by wearing a novelty necktie at the wrong times could make you the butt of a joke and have workmates laughing at you, rather than at your jokes.

Making the right choice of necktie for the right occasion is not always that easy, and novelty necktie wearers sometimes don't get it right.

There are some great novelty neckties around. They can depict characters from your favorite cartoons or shows, movie stars, reflect your hobbies, your favorite food or drink, your pets, or your likes and dislikes, but wearing one to an important board meeting unless you are the boss is a no-no.

Be sensible with it and choose a necktie to suit the occasion. The time to wear your favorite 'my company stinks but I need the money' necktie is not when you are asking your boss for a raise.

Likewise, novelty neckties with your prowess with women might go down well with the guys on a Friday night after work, but your prospective in-laws may be less amused.

If wearing a plain tie makes you feel like you blend in with the crowd too much for your tastes, then there are more subtle novelty neckties from which to choose. These can reflect your personality just as much.

Just because its novelty doesn't mean of course, it has to be funny. There are some rather nice art themed ties for example, and some of the connoisseur novelty neckties are actually quite tasteful.

Examples of themed ties that are not likely to offend anyone are perhaps those from works of art or scenery. The Mona Lisa may not be everyone's favorite artwork, but at least it's not going to upset anyone.

So you see you don't have to give up your personality by being too sober or dowdy when making a choice of necktie, just ensure you are mindful of the event you are wearing it to.

There are many new designs being introduced in the novelty necktie market each year as their popularity continues to rise. You never know, you may even find one as a Christmas present for one of your humorless colleagues that will bring a smile to their face!
