They started selling the shoes, but didn?t have a name for them until one day when their sales manager, James Muir, headed to the southeast in order to try to sell the product. During a dinner with his salesmen, he was served a fried cornball that was called a hush puppy. Intrigued, Muir asked how the fried treat got the name, and was told that farmers would throw the food to their dogs in order to stop them from barking. The term ?barking dogs? is often used to describe sore feet. Muir knew that the new, comfortable shoes had to be called Hush Puppies, because they were so comfortable that they, too, could ?quiet barking dogs?.
