As you're buying batteries, it's important to find out two things: how long they last and how much they cost. You'll also want to figure out exactly how the battery works with the device, and the length of time it needs to recharge. You don't want to be on a business trip trying to figure out batteries right before a big presentation!
Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries were the first rechargeable laptop batteries. The advantages of these batteries were their long life, versatility and low price. Most companies no longer use NiCd batteries because there are better, more advanced options available.
Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries were better than nickel cadmium batteries in terms of power output, cost, safety and reliability. The only problem with NiMH batteries was a memory issue, which meant they had to be completely discharged before a recharge for optimum efficacy. Some older laptops still have these kinds of batteries.
The most popular batteries for laptops is now the lithium ion (LiON). LiON batteries don't have the memory and recharging issues of NiMH batteries, and they weigh a lot less than previous types of laptop batteries. On the other hand, they are the most expensive kind of laptop batteries.
Cell phones are not as expensive as they used to be, but you can still end up paying a lot for one. You might need to save for a few months to get the best phone on the market. Or you might need to watch your spending more once you start getting the bills for cell phone fees and extras. You might also need to consider the cost of cell phone batteries.
Most cell phones have a basic battery, but many people choose to purchase a better battery with a higher capacity. Like so many things, the cheapest option may not be the best. As the old saying goes: you get what you pay for. It's possible to find a high-capacity battery for a good price, but it could be a used, restored battery. Usually made with old parts, restored cell phone batteries don't usually function as well as new ones. If the price sounds too good, chances are you're being sold a restored cell phone battery.
A digital camera battery is probably the most important digital camera accessory. Some digital cameras can consume power at an alarming rate, providing no more than a few hours of continuous shooting time before the battery is drained. Other cameras are renowned for the long life of their digital camera battery which allows users to snap away with barely a thought to power consumption. It is important to know how you intend to use your camera and what type of battery it needs.
Digital camera batteries come in two kinds. The standard AA-size battery is extremely common. You can also get a rechargeable digital camera battery made by the camera's manufacturer. These are often called proprietary batteries.
