You may think that your computer is smarter than anything else you have ever seen and things will never go wrong with it. That assumption couldn't be any further from the truth. Computers are pieces of equipment that allow us to advance in technology and to have an easier way of sharing files and information. Therefore, computers can, and it is almost safe to say that they will, crash at some point in their long hard lives.
You may know that having backup files for anything you have saved on your computer is very important, what you may not know is the best method for storing your files so your information is not lost when your computer enter into its last start up.
You may chose to have an off site, external backup. This means that you have any files saved on an external storage device or even a disk which you have placed in a safe location so no one else will have access to the device. Many times this means having the files stored in a safe place at your work, home, or some people have used a safe deposit box at the local bank.
Storing your backup files in another location will help protect them against fire, flood, and other acts of nature. Be sure you are the only one that can access these files when you need to do so.
Another method you may want to try is an external, on site backup. Similar to the off site backup, you simply create the backup files, store them on an external storage device, which in this case can be a flash drive, CD’s, or an external hard drive, and keep them in a safe place where you can have unlimited access to them without the hassle of driving to another location to retrieve them.
The third option is a one disk, internal backup. This is generally used with a large hard drive, in which there is enough space for the disk to be divided so that one part of the disk can be used to store any backup files. When using this method you will be able to use automatic backup software that will save any files automatically each day. You will also be able to save any files manually and copy them from one part of the device to the other with no problem. This method is not generally recommended for reasons such as hard drive failure. If your computer crashes you may lose any saved files that were meant to be backup files.
Lastly, you may use multiple disks with an internal backup. This will allow you to set up another hard drive within your computer that operates separately thus allowing you to have more space and security for your backup files. This method will also allow you to retrieve any files that would have been lost in a computer crash. Separate hard drives are more helpful than just having one.
When deciding which method is right for you, you should do the necessary research so that you will know what you are going to need to do so that you will be able to backup your files and retrieve them with ease.
