It can be really annoying when you read articles or see them on TV about people blaming their poor diet choices on society. The fact that there are fast food restaurants out there doesn't mean you have to go to one three times a week for lunch. The same is true for vending machines. They may be everywhere but there isn't anyone required to buy something from them.

For the most part society seems a vending machine as a way to get what they want fast. It is a substitute when they don't pack a lunch, have to work late, or they just want something additional to eat or drink. Even when some good choices are offered though that doesn't mean someone is going to buy them. Certain items tend to move very quickly from vending machines, and most of them aren't good for those consuming them.

Statistically, even when a vending machine does have healthy foods in it, people will choose something else. This is common when there are many items to choose from in a given machine. There is no way to force a person with a weight problem to get a bag of peanuts over a chocolate bar. You also can't make children get juice instead of a soda when they are on their own and spot a vending machine.

It is this issue of children making poor choices at vending machines that has stirred up controversy at schools. There have been many complaints by parents when they find out their child isn't buying a hot meal at school. Instead they are using their lunch money to fill up on junk from the vending machines. So many schools are removing them from the facility.

Other schools have compromised and they only allows students to have access to them before and after school. This doesn't make the owners of the vending machines very happy though. They are certainly missing out on a large volume of sales during the course of the day. Students used to buy snacks and drinks all day long between classes.

As a result some owners are having to move their vending machines so they can make enough money. What was once a very good location has turned out to be one that doesn't do very well anymore. Of course if they have contracts in place they may have to let the vending machine take a loss until it ends.

There are vending machines out there that do offer very healthy foods and drinks. This means those that do watch their diet can get something out of them as well. If you are starving but on a diet you don't have to choose to go hungry or to eat something that isn't good for you. Owners of vending machines are watching to see how such sales go because they still need to make a profit.

The truth is that vending machines aren't to blame for people being overweight. Poor food choices on a regular basis is. The fact that most children and adults don't get adequate exercise is a factor as well. Due to so many complaints about what is in some vending machines, some changes have been made. Yet the owners of these machines will often tell you that it is the items full of sugar that often sell out anyway.
