There are a handful of variables that affects if a vending machine will see more or less sales over the course of the winter. If there will be less people walking around that area due to the cold then you will likely experience a drop in sales. Some places get more traffic though such as retail stores when people are engaging in their holiday shopping.
After Halloween the sales of candy in vending machines may decline. Most people will have enough of it on hand for a while to satisfy their sweet tooth. You may discover that sales of such vending machine items dips again after the first of the year. This is due to the number of people that decide not to consume sweets or to lose weight as part of their New Years resolution.
You may find that what is selling shifts in the winter time as well. For example you may find you sale more soft drinks and you are selling less water. This is due to the fact that people naturally tend to consume more water when they weather is warmer. Being prepared to accommodate these types of changes is very important.
It is the effective vending machine owner that is willing to invest time in noticing such patterns and behaviors. It is very important from the very beginning to make sure you have locations that will generate income all year long. A swimming pool or a baseball field may not turn out to be a good choice as they will only get traffic to generate sales for small seasons out of the year.
You need to keep your stock of vending machine items fresh all the time. You may need to cut back on how much you buy to adapt to slow levels of sales in the winter. You may need to buy more though if the machines are selling rapidly. Even if sales are slow you need to be checking on them at least once a week. You may discover that increased winter time sales means you have to go there several times a week though to prevent items from being completely sold out.
Do all you can to keep your vending machines high regardless of what season it is. This is going to take some planning and even some risk taking. However, you need customers to view your vending machines as being very reliable. They should be able to walk up to it, put their money in, and walk away with what they want without giving it too much thought.
With this information you will be able to determine if you have a site that is worth hanging on to when things slow down. The amount of changes in the volume of sales over the winter will vary so it can't be predicted. If you don't feel that your vending machine is making as much money as it should, consider finding better locations for them to increase your sales.
