From childhood on through adulthood, we are all coached in certain fields whether it be little league, math, or even birthing a child. However, what are Executive Communication Coaches? What do they do and why would they be beneficial to me and you? An executive communication coach is a new trend arising in corporate America and can be a vital part to the growth of our thriving companies across the United States.
An executive communication coach helps people have the courage to express their ideas in a work situation in ways that are most effective. This is important because many people are so concerned with expressing thoughts too strongly and thereby pushing listeners away, while other people believe that their message must be presented with too strong of a force in order for it to be heard. To strike the best balance between these extremes, an executive coach can help you to express thoughts while allowing for open communication as well.
How can you benefit from executive job coaching? A good coach has the ability to eliminate barriers to your communicating freely. It is the contention of executive coaches that creativity suffers greatly, and in a costly way, when the expression of views and ideas is suppressed, or even just discouraged. A lack of effective communication can adversely affect the bottom line through detrimental effects to relationships and in many other areas at all levels within an organization.
Speaking up in meetings or other social settings can often be a daunting task. There are numerous reasons that people aren't outspoken one that is work related is a fear of the negative consequences when speaking against someone of authority. Other reasons that someone might not speak up are; fear of offending others, avoiding issues, everyone else is quiet, self-doubt or simply being unaware of how to speak up positively.
Take note of the fact that many of these reasons are the same as those that all of us feel in our interactions. All of these things are detrimental to the effectiveness of our daily communications. This where a communications coach comes in, helping to both identify and eliminate these issues with effective solutions. They will follow a formula called FACE, which stands for facts, appreciation, consequence/cost, and expectation.
We should examine the parts of this equation. Communication begins with objective information (facts), not speculation, and this should be stated, Next, acknowledge that the opinions of others matter and are welcomed (appreciation), and consider next how the way you react or what you do will impact the others involved in the situation (cost). Finally, make it plain what specific result you want to happen (expectation). This "f-a-c-e" model helps you remain courteous while leaving no doubt about what you hope to accomplish.
This is only a small example of what good executive communication coaches will do for your office. The expertise that they demonstrate will be a great aid in facilitating more effective communication between colleagues at the office, thus increasing productivity overall.
