Despite some young teenagers hiding a new 'ink stain' on their skin from their parents, tattoos have entered our society's mainstream and are here to stay. Seen now as an art form people no longer have to venture down dark alleys to find a tattoo artist and risk ending up regretting their decision.

Over the decades and for a vast majority of people, the cross tattoo has been the design of choice. And they have not just chosen two black lines crossing over one another, some have magnificent designs in amazing colors covering entire body parts.

People who have decided to create works of art with their tattoos very often have some idea of what the entire design will look like before they get started. They will then take their time in having it completed usually based on either what their body can tolerate or on a money factor as some designs can be really expensive.

It goes without saying that cross tattoos are associated with religion in some way or another and it is for this reason a lot of people choose to get this design. For others though it is merely just a preference.

Some people claim to reach a type of euphoria while they are receiving their tattoo and with every sting of the needle it only increases their desire to get more.

Religion does play a major role in the design of the cross tattoo. The sincere religious person's tattoo will have special meaning and when looked upon might bring them happiness or sadness dependent upon what the tattoo was meant for. There are also those who merely like the designs and bright colors and believe that the tattoo is like a piece of jewelry that is worn on the skin.

Of course there is also a slightly darker side to cross tattoos. Members of some gangs or religious cults make a sinister use of these tattoos by using designs shaped like a cross but done so with the use of guns or sword pictures. In some cases they may even have a tattoo done of a cross, either in the traditional form or as described above but have it deliberately drawn upside down.

One of the most used crosses aside from the simple line design is the Celtic cross. The Celtic cross has an ornate design that appeals to most people regardless of the actual history and meaning behind it.
