The question that is always on peoples minds when they think about tattoos is - will it hurt? There are two different factors that will affect the answer to this, and they are where you have it done on your body and who you have it done by.
If you have your tattoo done somewhere that has a lot of bone near the surface of the skin then I have found that to be more painful and strange as the tattoo machine will vibrate your bone as it works! If you can then aim to get it done somewhere with some muscles of fat to protect you.
You can get your tat done on your upper arm if you are worried about how much it will hurt, mine didn't hurt much at all. Or you can have them done on the lower part of your leg (the back or side not the front!) which I have heard is also good.
Getting a tattoo will hurt if you don't take good care of the tattoo at first. In a sense, the tattoo is a wound. It has to heal properly and that will not happen if you don't cleanse and treat it. You must keep a close eye on your tattoo if you want to prevent infections and complications.
If you do not moisturise the area intensively then you may get scabs forming on your new tat. You want to try and avoid this wherever possible because if you accidentally pull one of those scabs off it can wreck your tattoo. Your artist can advise you how best to look after your new tat.
You may do everything right though and still get an infection, this would be the artists fault in that case. Getting a tattoo splits the skin and makes it open to infection, so if the parlor is not clean, or heaven forbid, they reuse needles, then you stand the chance of picking up and infection. The only way to prevent this is to scope out the place before you commit to anything. Try and ask if you can watch someone else first. That way you get to see if they are using fresh needles and taking good care before you put yourself in the hotseat.
Some tattoos become tainted due to an allergic effect to the color. So before you obtain your tattoo, talk to your doctor about how you can figure out if you have allergies to the elements in most tattoo ink.
Is having a tattoo painful? Sure, if you don't follow the proper precautions and carry out background research. To avoid a painful tattoo, have it done on a suitable part of your body and go to a parlor that comes recommended from someone you know who has a tattoo already from there!
